The connection between the Grammy-nominated Alfredo and its 2025 sequel isn't simply cosmetic or evident just for its combination of singular artists. Alfredo opened with a track, titled after a year, that had Freddie Gibbs in combat mode, locking horns with a fusiony lead guitar. Alfredo 2 starts similarly and plays out cinematically with the rapper compatible as ever with the superabundant flashback noir stylings of his beatmaking partner. However, this is a couple shades darker in documenting Gibbs' street dealings. All indulgent diversions, no matter how much wit Gibbs packs into detailing them, are freighted with a sense of looming mortality and inescapable drudgery. When he offhandedly declares, "Hundred years old, I'm-a be gang bangin'/Stuck in my ways, the more I exist, Ain't shit but my age changin'," it's with a mix of pride and acquiescence. He could just as easily be rapping about being a veteran steel mill worker with no retirement prospects. For all his weariness, Gibbs remains compelling and cogent. This time, JID, Larry June, and Anderson .Paak are the guests, and the track with Paak is (no surprise) both the hookiest and most in tune with Gibbs' heavy ambivalence.
