Noah Kahan - The Great Divide
AVAILABLE IN 3 VINYL COLOR VARIANTS
Riding the momentum from his big commercial breakthrough, 2022's Stick Season, singer/songwriter Noah Kahan released his fourth full-length, The Great Divide. Like many other solid follow-up sets, it simply takes what made the predecessor so engaging and boosts it with more expensive production, tighter songwriting, and a larger scope. Effortlessly relatable -- which translated to chart-topping success across the globe -- he's still got quite the knack for making the mundane seem so poignant. That observational eye elevates moments like the chorus on the excellent title track, where he cries, "I hope you settle down, I hope you marry rich/I hope you're scared of only ordinary sh*t." On "Doors," a simple snapshot ends up revealing more about his family and upbringing than any direct confessional ("I grew up pretending sticks were little guns/I would point 'em at my dad and he'd get mad/Cause God forbid I hurt someone"), while a simple turn of phrase can make a line like "Make a living working for the paid time off" beg for placement on a tour shirt. Though overly long, it's at least a generous offering for fans of Kahan's reflective and introspective folk-rock yearnings. Additional standouts include the relatively lively anthems "American Cars" and "Deny Deny Deny," the dusty twang of "Haircut," and the urgent "Porch Light," whose banjo and beautiful high notes justify its selection as a single. From the Green Mountains to headlining Fenway Park, this New England boy has extended his winning streak with another accessible set where listeners can imagine meeting him in a bar to chat about the old times and catch up on the new.
