Katseye - Beautiful Chaos EP
NEON LIME VINYL
The sophomore EP from international pop group Katseye is indeed, as one of the words in the title implies, chaos. Kicking off with the cacophonous "Gnarly" -- a head-rattling, pulse-pounding dose of noise that could have been crafted by M.I.A. two decades prior -- Beautiful Chaos quickly veers into romantic Latin territory with "Gabriela" and then hyperpop-lite on "Gameboy" and "Mean Girls." The five-track effort ends in under 15 minutes with another riot of energy that coincidentally shares a name with the aforementioned electro star, "M.I.A." These bookends are the only interesting tracks here, at least offering something exciting and unexpected to counteract the midsection tracks that could have been performed by any number of other artists. Otherwise, the "chaos" Katseye is purporting to be "beautiful" is anything but, with a confusing smattering of genre and mood that doesn't quite hold together.
