Flirting with the pop and dance charts since the mid-2010s, Madison Beer burst into Top Ten of album charts around the world with her third long-player, locket. Notwithstanding its demure title, the album's confessional, still-bitten, twice-shy sentiments assert themselves in steely dance songs and slippery '90s R&B textures. In examples of the former, its release was led by the pulsing dancefloor entries "make you mine" and "yes baby," a song set in the bedroom despite its 134 bpm. The bulk of the record, however, consists of sultry, lingering memories, a heavy heart, and the intention to move on even if it means not being over it ("healthy habit" and the pop-rock-club fusion "bittersweet"). The album ends on the wispy piano coda-turned-glitchy electro-pop ballad "nothing at all," which considers whether love is worth the risk after all. For better or worse, locket sounds like an album with a lot of producers, and her team included Leroy Clampitt (Justin Bieber, Sabrina Carpenter), Jasper Harris (Kendrick Lamar, Lil Nas X), One Love (FLETCHER, Hailee Steinfeld), Lostboy (Tiësto, Rita Ora), and Lucy Healey. U.K. singer/songwriter Matt Maltese co-wrote and played piano on "locket theme.
