BLACK VINYL

Meghan Trainor plays with her pop sound on her seventh album, 2026's Toy With Me. The follow-up to 2024's Timeless, the set was largely recorded in Sweden with a handful of producers, including Grant Boutin, Gabe Yaron, Ellis, and Mike Sabath, among others. Famously recognized for her 2014 doo wop-inspired hit "All About That Bass," Trainor has explored a mix of pop styles over the years. Here, she continues to straddle sounds, all the while working to stay connected to the frothy, empowered energy of her initial breakthrough. It's a tone she strikes from the start with the opening "Get In Girl," a supportive breakup anthem that finds her soaring through a sparkling, '60s orchestral soul sound. More throwback moments pop up throughout, including "Chef's Kiss," the snappy, innuendo-steeped "Pink Cadillac," and the breezy "Princess." While much of the album should appeal to fans of Trainor's early work, it's when she kicks off her doo wop shoes that the record really picks up. This is especially true in the album's latter half, where cuts like "Hush" and "Shimmer" find her embracing a clubby, '70s disco spirit.
