Sam Barber's assured 2024 debut, Restless Mind, introduced a songwriter willing to mine the darker corners of the human condition to dig out hard-earned wisdom. Broken View continues to parse the vestiges of broken relationships and the complicated and messy ways we communicate our hopes and fears to each other, albeit with an occasional ray of sunshine and a tad more polish. His vulnerable lyricism and seamless blend of country, folk, and flashes of ’90s grunge lend standout tracks like “Borrowed Time,” “Just a Kid,” and “The More I Hope” a gravitas that rises above the typical confessional singer/songwriter mold.
