Experience Excellent Detail, Dynamics, and Timing Along with Stable Imaging, Consistent Balance, and Engaging Naturalism: Wharfedale Denton 1S Bookshelf Speakers Feature a New Coaxial Array and Custom Tuning

Fifty years after the original model established benchmarks for naturalism, craftsmanship, and value in its cost sector, the Wharfedale Denton 1S reimagines what a compact bookshelf loudspeaker can do at its price point all the while claiming a new heritage that is decidedly modern. A clean-sheet design that provides rich, engaging sound from an unobtrusive 13.0 x 9.3 x 10-inch (HWD) footprint, it combines legacy aesthetics, playful curves, and contemporary audio engineering to stand apart in a crowded field — and please you with engaging fidelity.

Bolstered by a brand-new coaxial driver array that places a one-inch silk-dome tweeter concentrically with a 6.5-inch woven Kevlar mid/bass cone, Denton 1S allows both drivers to radiate from a single acoustic center — resulting in time-aligned and phase-coherent performance. Aural unity, focus, smoothness, and definition are constants. Stable imaging, wide soundstages, and consistent tonal balances across a broad listening zone invite you to hear your favorite recordings with fresh ears and discover new gems in the process. In addition, the coaxial layout enabled Wharfedale to devise a small, rigid cabinet with minimal interruption of the front baffle, benefits that improve Denton 1S’ structural integrity and physical elegance.

Technically speaking, the 15-pound Denton 1S thrives in the areas of crossover implementation and integration. Via extensive modeling and critical listening tests, the Peter Comeau-voiced crossover is tuned to operate seamlessly, ensuring the drivers behave as a single unified system rather than discrete components. The practical result: Music flows with convincing timing and scale, preserving detail and dynamics without fatigue — qualities often associated with far larger loudspeakers. Speaking of characteristics associated with the latter. The pint-sized Denton 1S offers impressive low-frequency responsiveness down to 45Hz by way of a precision-tuned bass-reflect enclosure, dual rear ports, and 11.5-liter internal volume.

Rated at 88dB sensitivity with an eight-ohm nominal impedance, Denton 1S can be easily driven by a wide range of amplifiers. Another user- and room-friendly trait? It claims exceptional placement flexibility and can be even used for on-wall applications. Plus, a rear-panel “Brilliance” EQ switch enables subtle tonal adjustment to suit free-space or near-wall positioning. This ensures optimal balance whether Denton 1S is stand-, shelf-, or wall-mounted. Brilliant!

As is the look. Along with the smooth curves and luxurious paint finish, Denton 1S shows off with a signature cloth grille and retro badging in contrasting silver. They complement cabinets with multi-layer panels, internal bracing, and carefully controlled damping to suppress unwanted resonance. Indeed, everything about Denton 1S adds up to a now-and-future classic true to the Denton legacy.
